Ending speculation over the alleged rift between Special Investigation Team (SIT) members probing the Behbal Kalan and Kotkpaura firing incidents over the chargesheet against five policemen and a former MLA, the Punjab Police on Friday asked the Home Department to allow the prosecution of the accused cops.
Under rules, permission of the government vide the Home Department is required to prosecute a gazetted officer.
A government spokesperson said the Police Department had attached a copy of the chargesheet with a request, seeking the prosecution of then Ludhiana Inspector General of Police (IGP) Paramraj Umranangal, former Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Charanjit Singh Sharma, ADCP Paramjit Singh Pannu, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Baljit Singh and Station House Officer Gurdeep Sindh Pandher.
They were named in the chargesheet filed in the court of Judicial Magistrate, Faridkot, on May 28. The SIT is probing the police firing at the protesting mob in Behbal Kalan and Kotkapura on October 14, 2015, following a series of sacrilege incidents in the state.
Earlier in the day, reports said there were differences within the five-member SIT over the submission and content of the challan. It was alleged that some SIT members had sent a communication to DGP Dinkar Gupta, disassociating themselves from the certain contents of the chargesheet.
Besides naming the five policemen as the direct accused, the SIT said it was further investigating the role of former Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal and former DGP Sumedh Singh Saini into circumstances leading to the police firing.
