Farmers in the district have announced to start paddy sowing from June 1 despite directions of the state government to start it from June 13. They have announced to gherao officials and oppose them if they try to stop them.

On May 6, Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh had announced to allow farmers to sow paddy a week earlier from the scheduled date of June 20.

“State Congress leaders and officials are unaware about our problems and they want to impose their decisions on us. Many farmers will start to sow paddy from June 1,” said Jagroop Singh, a farmer from Longowal.

While talking to The Tribune, many farmers alleged that paddy needed more than four months to ripen, but the delay in sowing last year had caused huge losses to them. But this year, they are unwilling to take risk.

“The delay in the sowing leads to delay in ripening and harvesting and finally our crops land in grain markets with higher moisture content and officials refuse to purchase our paddy. Then to sell our paddy, we have to protest. However, this time we have decided to protest if the authorities try to stop us from sowing paddy from June 1,” said Amrik Singh, district president, BKU (Ugrahan).

Meanwhile, activists of seven farmer unions on Friday staged a protest, seeking lifting of ban on sowing paddy from June 1 and uninterrupted power supply to the agriculture sector, apart from raising other key issues confronting the farming community in the state.
