Patiala Civil Surgeon Dr Manjit Singh resigned from his post here on Friday immediately after he received his transfer order.
Dr Manjit Singh, an eye specialist, who had joined as Civil Surgeon only 10 months ago, said his “honesty and transparency have been disrespected”.
“My sheer dedication and sincerity have been evident because all indicators of better health in the district have shown marked improvements,” he said.
Ironically, the state Health Department had given him a two-year extension only two months ago for his good performance.
He said he was shocked to learn about his transfer order. “If they (state government) don’t value me and my work, there is no point in continuing,” he said.
Talking to The Tribune, he said, “I have lived my life on professional morality and principles which I can’t compromise. My principles were at stake, therefore, I resigned to safeguard them.”
As soon as the news of Dr Manjeet’s resignation spread, employees of the department began queuing up outside his office. Employees called his decision an emotional one. An employee said: “Dr. Manjit was known for his honesty and austere lifestyle”.
Reacting to the resignation, Health and Family Welfare Minister Brahm Mohindra said: “The department has transferred 11 health officers. But I am sad that he has resigned from the post. He should re-think his decision”. Meanwhile, Harish Malhotra joined as Civil Surgeon Patiala on Friday evening.
