The police have booked three persons for abetment to suicide after a youth of Thandewala village near here, who was booked in a “false” theft case, jumped into a canal.
The body of the victim, Gurtej Singh, a daily-wager, is yet to be recovered. Some of his belongings, including a bicycle, have been recovered from near a canal outside the village.
His brother Charanjit Singh lodged a complaint to the police, alleging that Surjit Kaur of their village had alleged that Gurtej had committed a theft at her residence. Parsa Singh, Naib Singh and Kala Singh, all residents of the same village, had pressured Gurtej to admit to the theft. “My brother was innocent. He could not bear the insult and committed suicide by jumping into a canal,” said Charanjit in his complaint to the police.
