Abohar, June 28

A day after stalling proceedings of the long-awaited Municipal Council meeting here, as many as 165 sanitation workers on Friday staged a dharna inside the council complex to protest non-payment of salary for six months.

Police have been deployed to maintain peace.

The MC’s last meeting took place on December 31 though it was essential to hold at least one meeting each quarter if a monthly meeting is missed.

Officials said there was no money to pay salary and the state government cannot release grant-in-aid to pay wages. The council gets Rs 75 lakh as VAT share each month and it has not been received for the past two months, while income from building site plans now goes to the state exchequer due to online submissions. — OC
