In a bid to avoid a showdown with the Akal Takht and Akali-dominated Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee over holding of parallel functions to mark the 550th birth anniversary celebrations of Guru Nanak, the state government has initiated a move to convince Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh and SGPC president Gobind Singh Longowal to organise joint programmes.
Cooperation Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, who is also the MLA from Dera Baba Nanak, would meet the Jathedar and SGPC chief in Amritsar tomorrow or Sunday to invite them to the government programmes and to devise a plan for joint events.
Randhawa said Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh had asked the group of ministers during the last Cabinet meeting to reach out to the Akal Takht and the SGPC and other Sikh institutions for joint programmes.
Randhawa said the occasion demands that everyone should think beyond party lines as Guru Nanak stood for communal brotherhood and co-existence.
Sources said the move to invite the Jathedar also aims at ending confusion among Sikh masses on the parallel functions. Though the final schedule of the functions is yet to be released, Prime Minster Narendra Modi has reportedly confirmed to the SGPC about attending the main function.
Capt Amarinder had recently sought a financial package from the Prime Minister for the celebrations.
