Sangrur, June 28
Though the Sangrur administration has increased the government rate of bricks from Rs 4,200 to Rs 4,900 per thousand, including tax and carriage charges of Rs 350, but brick kiln owners are demanding Rs 5,300. The difference between market and government rate of bricks has been troubling panchayats of various villages.
The decision to enhance government rate of bricks for panchayats has been taken during a meeting here in the morning. “The market rate of bricks is around Rs 5,100-5,200 per one thousand, but the government rate was Rs 4,200 till last evening and today the administration has increased it to Rs 4,900 for panchayats. Still there is difference and many brick kiln owners unwilling to supply bricks to panchayats. Compelled, the government has started handing over village development works to government departments rather than getting these conducted through panchayats,” said Gurmale Kaur, sarpanch of Mattran village.
Area sarpanches last week had also organised a meeting at Bhawanigarh and sent their written request to the authorities, seeking increase in government rate of bricks.
“Officers of the Panchayat Department raise questions if we spend more than our limits to purchase bricks for the development of our villagers. The Punjab government must raise the government rate as per market rate so that we get required bricks at government rates for village development,” said Kulwant Singh, another panchayat member of area.
Today during a meeting under the chairmanship of ADC, Development, Subhash Chandar, all officers, including District Development and Panchayat Officers, District Food and Civil Supply Controller, officers of the Public Works Department (Buildings and Roads) and Nagar Council, Sangrur, gave their consent to raise the government rates from Rs 4,200 to Rs 4,900, but brick kiln owners are not satisfied.
“In Patiala district, the government rate of bricks is 5,300 per thousand, including tax and carriage charges, and we had demanded the same from the Sangrur administration. We were not called to the meeting. We would meet the Sangrur DC for same in the coming some days,” said Kewal Krishan Longowalia, district president of the Sangrur Save Brick Kilns Welfare Association. When contacted, Sangrur DC Ghanshyam Thori said the administration had increased rates as per the requirement of panchayats and kiln owners.
“Every district has its own territory and Patiala rates could not be implemented in Sangrur. But if owners of brick kilns have any problem, they can meet our officers,” said Thori.
