The state government has increased the cooking cost by three per cent for mid-day meal for over 26 lakh students in the government schools.
The per-day per student cooking cost of the mid-day meal in schools is now up from Rs 4.35 to Rs 4.48 for primary classes (I to V) and from Rs 6.51 to 6.71 for upper primary classes (VI to VIII).
The cooking cost was earlier increased by 5.35 per cent in November 2018, increasing it from Rs 4.13 to Rs 4.35 and from Rs 6.18 to Rs 6.51 for primary and upper primary students, respectively.
The revised cooking cost will be effective from July 1, read a letter issued by the manager, Punjab mid-day meal scheme, to all district education officers. The cooking cost under the mid-day meal scheme is to purchase cooking oil, pulses, vegetables and condiments. Under the National Programme of Mid-Day Meal in schools, 60 per cent of the cooking cost is shared by the Centre and 40 per cent by the state government.
However in Union Territories, this cost is borne 100 per cent by the Central government and in three Himalayan states, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Uttarakhand, the share is in 90:10 ratio.
