Even after two entrance tests and three rounds of counselling, as many as 288 seats are lying vacant in 10 meritorious schools of the state. Now, the Education Department has decided to conduct the third entrance test to fill the vacant seats. In fact, the online registration for the third test has already begun and ends on July 1.
Officials said students who had not applied earlier or could not appear in the written test on April 21 could apply for the final written test on July 7.
This year, only 32 per cent of students had qualified the written test. Of the total 14,909 students who appeared on April 21 and May 5, only 4,841 were able to crack the written test.
The department was forced to conduct another test after no eligible student was left for counselling.
Last year, the department had to lower the eligibility percentage from 80 to 55 per cent to fill the seats.
Among the 10 schools, Gurdaspur district has the highest vacancy with 104 seats, followed by Amritsar with 66 seats.
Sangrur is on the third spot with 37 vacant seats.
Losing charm
- The meritorious schools were opened to impart quality education exclusively to the students scoring above 80 per cent in the PSEB Class X board exams from a rural and poor background. However, the programme seems to have lost its sheen over the years.
- Though students are provided free-of-cost education, extra teaching classes, hostel facility, books and uniform, meritorious schools have failed to perform. The schools are said to be grappling with a shortage of teachers, dropping enrollment and frequent policy shifts, said the officials.
