In the wake of media reports pertaining to sale of acid-cleaned ginger in vegetable markets, surprise checks were conducted in 31 fruit and vegetable mandis across the state on Friday, said KS Pannu, Director, Tandrust Punjab Mission.
A host of teams, including those constituted at divisional, district and market committee levels, were assigned the task. The teams comprised officials of the Mandi Board, Food Safety and Horticulture Department which searched mandis for unsafe ginger as well as rotten and unscien tifically ripened fruits and vegetables.
Pannu said no such ginger was found in the vegetable markets. However, on an aggregate, around 140.40-quintal rotten fruit and vegetables were found and destroyed on the spot, he said.
