Activists of the Communist Party of India and General Reta Workers Union, Fazilka, staged a protest against illegal sand mining and sand mafias operating in the district, in Jalalabad, on the final day of filing the nomination paper today.
They also burnt the effigy of Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh, who allegedly failed to keep a check on the theft of white sand.
The police officials persuaded the activists to postpone their act to prevent any clash. CPI Secretary Hans Raj Golden who led the protest said they were to burn the effigy of the CM during his scheduled visit to Jalalabad at 11 am but they had to postpone the programme to 12 pm. However, the CM did not turn up.
Hans Raj Golden and Surinder Dhandian alleged that sand was being illegally excavated here at many places for long in connivance with the officials concerned by swindling the government exchequer. They claimed that they have brought the issue to the knowledge of several senior officials and ruling party politicians but in vain.
The CPI Secretary recalled that Fazilka Congress MLA Davinder Singh Ghubaya had conducted a raid on a sand quarry in Lamochar kalan village on August 27 and found several irregularities but the officials concerned had tried to hush up the matter and no action was taken against those responsible. He alleged that the FIR was registered against the unidentified persons and the excavation was stopped. He rued that the excavation of sand began again despite the fact that the quarry had already been dug upto 60 to 70 feet deep against the stipulated 10 feet depth.
