A day before the visit of Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh to the poll-bound Jalalabad segment on Monday, five activists of Punjab Police Training Prapt Berozgar Union climbed atop an overhead water tank in the office of Block Development and Panchayat Officer, Jalalabad, today evening leaving the administration on toes.
The activists allegedly broke open the lock of the office and climbed atop the tank. Besides, about 35-40 unemployed policemen have also been staging a protest beneath the water tank. They have been demanding permanent jobs for the unemployed trained policemen for long.
Sandeep Kumar, president of the union, district Fazilka unit, who is also sitting on the dharna told The Tribune that before coming to power Congress had promised to offer them jobs but it backtracked on its promise. He alleged that they had been running from pillar to post for the last 10 years, met several ministers and officials but in vain. He said the activists should not come down until they got a word from the horse’s mouth.
Several police and civil administration officials and Congress leaders, including Congress nominee, Jalalabad segment, Raminder Singh Awla, went to the site and tried to pacify them but they refused to budge.
