Reacting to a news report “To curb pollution, agro-scientists demand ban on straw reapers” published in these columns on September 17, Moga District Magistrate Sandeep Hans has put a blanket ban on the use of paddy straw reaper machines here for two months during the ensuing harvesting season by exercising powers vested under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).

The order came after progressive farmers and agriculture experts suggested the District Magistrate that ban on the paddy straw reaper or stubble shaver machines could help put an end to the stubble/straw burning practice.
