Moga, September 29

A 45-year-old debt-ridden farmer has allegedly committed suicide at Gagra village in Dharamkot subdivision of Moga district.

The police said today that the deceased had been identified as Surjit Singh who consumed some poisonous substance to end his life.

His wife Bhupinder Kaur said her husband owned just 2 acres and was under a debt of Rs 3 lakh, due to which he had been depressed for the past few months.

Her husband started a flour mill a couple of years ago to earn extra money so that he could repay his loan, but luck did not favour him. The flour mill business failed and he suffered losses. The cultivation of traditional crops on his land hardly helped him make both ends meet, she added.

The police had initiated inquest proceedings under section 174 of the CrPC.
