Flanked by thousands of area residents, farmer activist Manjit Dhaner today surrendered in a Barnala court in connection with a murder case registered in 2001. The Supreme Court had, earlier this month, directed Dhaner to surrender within four weeks.
Leaders of various farmer organisations today alleged that since Dhaner was instrumental in getting justice to the girl of Mehar Kalan village, who was raped and murdered in July 1997, he had been implicated in a false case.
“Today we have started an indefinite protest in Barnala and it would continue till pardon to Dhaner. It is shocking for all that an activist has been given imprisonment without any evidence. Our fight for justice would continue,” said Buta Singh Burjgill, convener of struggle committee, formed to fight for justice to Dhaner.
Narain Dutt, Prem and Manjit were fighting against the rape and murder of teenager Kiranjit Kaur of Mehal Kalan in July 1997. They had also formed anti-rape committee to get justice for the deceased girl.
Dutt, who was allegedly implicated in the murder case and was set free by the High Court, alleged that they had nothing to do with the murder. “The Union Government should pardon Dhaner immediately,” he said. Members of various organisations first converged at Barnala grain market, and then marched to Barnala court, where Dhander surrendered. — TNS
