Three masked assailants allegedly shot dead a drug smuggler identified as Harpreet Singh, alias Chintu, in a market here on Thursday.
Eyewitness said Harpreet Singh was standing near a juice shop when the motorcycle-borne assailants shot him dead. Senior Superintendent of Police (Rural) Navjot Singh Mahal and Phillaur DSP Davinder Singh Attri reached the spot on getting information.
Mahal told the media nine empty cartridges were found from the spot. Harpreet was taken to hospital in Ludhiana, where he was declared brought dead, he said, adding the deceased was facing six criminal cases. “He had been in jail since 2014 and came out on bail 10 days ago.”
“Personal enmity could be the reason behind the murder. Fingerprints experts and a dog squad were called for further investigation,” .
The police have registered a case under Sections 302 and 34 of the IPC, and Arms Act against unidentified men.
